Pune University retain waterpolo gold

PUNE, Nov 12: Defending champions Pune University retained the gold medal in water-polo at the recently concluded All India Inter-University Aquatic Championship held in Chandigarh recently.
Pune University, under the captaincy of international player Shailesh Bangale, hosted a very strong team comprising of six national players, which contributed to their total dominance in the tournament.
A total of 20 universities took part in the event. Being the defending champions, Pune University got a direct entry in the quarter finals, where they thrashed Guru Nanak University 10-0. Shailesh Bangale scored 3 goals, while Amit Kulkarni, Swanand Deshpande and Niranjan Dixit scored two each, while Manish Shivshankar piped in one.
In the semi-final, Pune University faced Kerala University, which also had the strength of national players. Pune recorded a final scorecard of 10-4. Shailesh Bangale scored four goals while Amit, Swanand and Niranjan contributed with two each.
For the title clash Pune came up against last years runners-up Mumbai. And the city lads came with a margin of 14-5. The main contributors this time were Shailesh Bangale with five goals and Amit, Swanand and Manish with two each. Niranjan, Muneer and debutant Mayur Jayade increased the tally with one goal apiece.
The team was well supported by an excellent performance from goal keeper Shailesh Manohar.
